Get ahead by getting ICC certified

There is only one way to become certified by the International Code Council.
You must pass their certification exam.

The exam tests both how well you have memorized a select few of the many, many important codes and how well you can find the correct codes by searching the book itself. Two of the most commonly used books are the IBC (International Building Code) and the IRC (International Residential Code). The IRC deals with 1 – 2 family structures no more than 3 stories in height. Basically anything outside of that falls within the IBC. Tests are divided into these two categories, the IRC is -1 (B-1, E-1, etc) while the IBC is -2 (B-2, E-2, etc).

Nobody is expected to memorize the entire volume, which is one reason why certifications are divided into sections: B (Building), E (Electrical), M (Mechanical), and P (Plumbing). The most common certification is the IRC B-1 and the IBC B-2, and most inspectors start with the B-1.

The official ICC certification exams are not easy and training is not cheap. The International Code Council offers their own virtual training sessions for about $200 for a six-hour online class. Other, independent companies offer practice exams for over $100. While most of these offer quality materials from reputable organizations, many of them are not compatible for the average person working through self study. That’s why we created our own exams based on the IRC B-1 certification exam.

How difficult are the ICC certification exams?

Hard. Despite the exams being open book and multiple choice, many people do not pass on the first try, or the second. The ICC has done an excellent job of designing the exams to test your ability to search and find not just the answers, but the right answer. Some questions seem impossible to find, others reference multiple chapters. And 60 questions have to be answered in two hours which means you have two minutes per question.
Needless to say, people who have their ICC certifications know what they are doing.

What does the exam cover?

I want to get a different ICC certification. Why bother with IRC B-1 practice exams?

One day we would love to have a practice exam for every certification ICC offers. However the usefulness of the practice B-1 exams is more than testing for the B-1 test. This will test your speed with indexing, finding relevant headings, scanning sections, and cross-reference information. In short, this will test your ability to use the IRC book which is fundamental for any IRC exam you may wish to take.
